Sucking is the first step to succeeding

Lately I’ve worried a lot about my writing.

I’ve just been rejected by another agent and started to lose faith in the quality of my writing and in the purpose of my project. I did what no writer should ever do: I stopped believing in myself, even for a brief few days. But those few days were dreadful. There is so much emotional investment that goes into writing and when you lose what you love most doing it’s kinda painful.

But I’ve managed to rechannel some kindness towards myself and my work again. After all, it’s only my first draft and I still have a long way to go and a lot of work to put into it before it becomes a really good book by any publishing standard.

And I’ve been reminded that it’s ok to suck at something first. It’s the first step towards being really good at something. And like literary agent Carly Watters said, I should not compare my beginning with somebody else’s middle.

Today I want to share with you this video in which Alexis Ohanian, the founder of reddit, talks about how sucking is the first step to being sorta good at something [Tweet this]. I think we lose track of how important it is to accept that if we stand a chance to one day achieve what we’ve set out to do.
